  • Description

A warm reception, coupled with appeals to aid in the development of the area, greeted Dahomey's Presidential Council during a visit to the Mono region last week. Head of state M. Hubert Maga and his two fellow members of the Presidential Council, M. Sourou-Migan Apithy and Dr. Justin Ahomadegbe, hinted that actin would be taken to remedy past neglect of the area.

After being presented with a three-legged stool-- symbolising the stability of the three-man Presidential Council -- Dahomey's leaders heard at first hand the pleas of local people for aid in developing the region's natural resources, including phosphates, calcium, marble and gypsum.

In addition, they learned that the failure to provide an adequate road network in the area was obstructing development.

Speaking at the town of Lokossa, Departmental Prefect M. Idrissou pleased for improved educational and medical facilities -- there are currently two doctors for the 375,000 inhabitants of the region.

Replying, M. Maga said that the Presidential Council had listened sympathetically to the grievances of the area and that the Mono region would not be forgotten in plans for national development.

His speech was followed by M. Ahomadegbe, who called on the people of Dahomey to units in their efforts to improve the standard of the whole country. It was to encourage this national effort that the Presidential Council had been formed, he added, and he urged the people to ignore defeatist criticism aimed against the stability of the country.

Finally, M. Apithy added his conviction that, if the country worked in unity, it could achieve a high level of national development. The Presidential Council completed their visit by seeing two successful recent projects -- an oil-producing plant and a cotton mill.
