Mr. Joshua Nkomo, the Rhodesian African Nationalist leader, arrived in Lusaka, Zambia, on Saturday (17 May) for talks with President Kenneth Kaunda. He flew in from Nairobi in Kenya, where he had stayed for three days after attending the Commonwealth Conference in Jamaica.
Before leaving Nairobi, Mr. Nkomo had told newsman at the airport that during his meeting the previous day with President Jomo Kenyatta, the President had offered Kenya's help for the independence struggle in Rhodesia.
Mr. Nkomo said that the African National Council in Rhodesia would not accept a compromise on its demand for independence. "There is nothing to compromise about" he said.
In a statement issued after their talks, President Kenyatta expressed his delight at his meeting with Mr. Nkomo, who has only recently been released from detention in Rhodesia, and described him as an old friend and one who had suffered for his country's independence.
