  • Description

IN JAPAN, THERE HAVE BEEN ANGRY PROTESTS BY FARMERS AGAINST THE USE OF LAND FOR FIRING PRACTICE BY AMERICAN LITTLE JOHN MISSILE CREWS.

YESTERDAY'S (SATURDAY'S) PROTEST DEMONSTRATION WAS AT A RANGE NEAR MOUNT FUJI, SOME 80 MILES (ABOUT 130 KMS) FROM TOKYO. THE FARMERS -ABOUT 900 STRONG - ASSEMBLED AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PRACTICE ZONE AND SET FIRE TO OLD CAR TYRES AS A SIGNAL OF THEIR DISCONTENT.

U.S. PUBLIC RELATIONS MEN EXPLAINED TO NEWSMEN THAT OFFICIAL PERMISSION HAD BEEN GIVEN TO FIRE THE GROUND-TO-GROUND MISSILE THERE. BUT BECAUSE THE FIRING ZONE HAD BEEN INVADED BY MANY FARMERS THE NIGHT BEFORE, THE PRACTICE WAS CANCELLED FOR SEVERAL HOURS.

SOME 400 POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO CLEAR THE ZONE. THERE WERE FIERCE SCUFFLES WHEN THE MISSILES WERE FIRED OVER THE RANGE FOR ABOUT 18 MILES (30 KMS) AND AT ANOTHER FIRING ZONE IN THE SAME AREA, PRACTICE HAD TO BE CANCELLED ALTOGETHER BECAUSE OF THE FARMERS' OPPOSITION.
