  • Description

At least nine people died and more than 50 were injured when a commuter train carrying more than 600 passengers was derailed in West London on Wednesday evening (December 19).

Firemen with acetylene torches had to cut into the twisted wreckage of four overturned coaches to free some of the injured and dead.

The train from London to Oxford was packed with Christmas shoppers.

A fleet of ambulances ferried the injured to nearby hospitals.

One of the injured passengers told newsmen the coach he was travelling in rose into the air, broke in half and he was thrown onto the rails.

The accident happened at the suburb of Ealing on an unlit section of track. Rescuers worked by the light of television lamps until emergency equipment arrived. Local people climbed down the railway embankment from their homes to help.

All traffic on the main line to the West of England was stopped by the overturned carriages which lay at crazy angles across four tracks.
