Former World Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali gave a boxing exhibition on Saturday in Casablanca. His opponent was a boxer from Mali, named Sounkalo, who had the will but not the skill to trouble Ali over eight pounds. It was just another workout for Ali, who is preparing for his next fight in September with Floyd Patterson.
SYNOPSIS: Casablanca has seen some sights in its time...and not the least of them was a boxing exhibition given last Saturday by former World Heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali. His opponent for the eight round bout was a middleweight boxer from Mali, named Sounkalo.
Ali went into the ring quite a few pounds heavier than his opponent. And within seconds it was obvious that the extra weight was the least of his many advantages.
Sounkalo showed that he had the will--but not the skill--to trouble the former world champion.
Ali, fresh from a recent fight in Ireland with a former sparring partner, Al Lewis, obviously enjoyed the workout. He is trying to got a few more rounds under his bolt before his next fight with another former champion, Floyd Patterson, in New York on September the twentieth. The winner gets a crack at champion Joe Frazier.
The Casablanca fight might not have been in world class, but the spectators enjoyed in, and Ali was mobbed afterwards. The ex-champ, who said recently: "It's hard to be humble when you're as good as I am", heard repeated shouts that he was "the Greatest".
