Fancy dress was the order of this very unhibited day, and revellers carried their bottles with them as they celebrated in the streets, danced round policemen, and kissed their girl-friend - or the nearest one available.
Most Rhineland towns were celebrating this annual carnival day, and almost everyone wore at least a funny hat and entered full-heartedly into the spirit of the thing.
The Cologne carnival is part of general pre-Lenten festivities celebrated throughout Germany and other Catholic countries before Ash Wednesday - Mar 2 this year.
