  • Description

In the training are known as Horse-Shoe Hill, two miles south of their Task Force Headquarters at Nui Dat in South Vietnam, Australian troops are conducting refresher courses for South Vietnamese soldiers as part of the programme for preparing the national troops to take on a greeter part of the war effort as other allied forces pull out.

Although the Australian training programme coincides with the United States announcement of troop withdrawals after the meeting last Sunday (June 8) between Presidents Nixon and Thien, Australia herself has no immediate plans for reducing her military strength in Vietnam Brigadier C.M.I. Pearson, Australian Task Force Commander, has told the South Vietnamese that his men would work hard to make the courses a success so that they could "go together and fight alongside one another for final victory."
Australia first sent Army advisers to South Vietnam in July 1962 and the first fighting unit -- an Army battalion -arrived in the war zone in May 1965. Today there are some 8,500 Australian troops duty in South Vietnam.

This particular training course was conducted by Corporal Maguire and Privates Berkrey and Prince; and it covers the use of grenades, military operations after dark, helicopter drill, guerilla capture, the use of M-16 and M-79 weapons, infantry tactics and general target practice.

These six-week "refresher courses" have been hailed by South Vietnamese military leaders as highly important to the tactical and technical experience of the Vietnamese Army.
