  • Description

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF WELSHMEN CAME TO LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) TO WATCH THEIR NATIONAL TEAM WIN A WELL DESERVED VICTORY OVER ENGLAND AT TWICKENHAM, ENGLAND'S STRONGHOLD OF RUGBY UNION. AND WHILE WALES WERE BEATING ENGLAND, THE SCOTS ON THEIR HOME GROUND, WERE HELD TO A DRAW BY FRANCE.

WALES BEAT ENGLAND BY 11 POINTS TO SIX, ALTHOUGH THE SCORE WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT IF ENGLAND HAD HAD A SUCCESSFUL GOAL-KICKER. BUT ENGLAND'S FULL BACK, DON RUTHERFORD, MISSED THREE PENALTIES IN THE FIRST 14 MINUTES, AND SQUANDERED A PENALTY AND A CONVERSION IN THE LAST FIVE MINUTES THAT MIGHT HAVE SAVED THE GAME FOR ENGLAND.

THE SCORING OPENED WITH A PENALTY KICK BY WALES. THEY HELD THEIR THREE POINT LEAD FOR JUST THREE MINUTES THEN ENGLAND, WITH TURHERFORD MAKING AN EXCELLENT ANGLED KICK, SCORED FROM A PENALTY TO MAKE IT THREE-ALL. AND THAT WAS THE SCORE AT HALF TIME. BUT BY NOW WALES WERE CLEARLY ON TOP -- GAINING ALL THE TIME FROM THE SET POSITIONS AND HAVING MUCH MORE POSSESSION OF THE BALL.

AFTER HALF-TIME WALES GAINED ANOTHER THREE POINTS FROM A PENALTY AND THEN, WITH 64 MINUTES GONE, MADE A BRILLIANT TRY. FITTINGLY IT WAS SCORED BY PASK, THE WELSH CAPTAIN, AFTER A MASTERLY RUN BY KEN JONES. PRICE CONVERTED TO PUT THE WELSH SCORE UP TO 11.

ENGLAND MADE A FINE ATTEMPT TO COME BACK IN THE LAST FEW MINUTES. JUST BEFORE THE FINAL WHISTLE PERRY SCORED A TRY FROM A SCRUM, FIVE YARDS OUT FROM THE LINE. BUT IT WASN'T CONVERTED.

SCOTLAND WERE HOSTS TO FRANCE AT MURRAYFIELD, THE FAMOUS EDINBURGH GROUND. A TRY BY WING-THREEQUARTER WHYTE EARNED SCOTLAND A 3-3 DRAW, BUT SCOTS' SUPPORTERS WERE DISAPPOINTED TO SEE SO MANY CHANCES FAILING.

THE LIVELY FRENCH PACK, RESPONDING TO THE LEAD OF THEIR CAPTAIN, CRAUSTE, CHASED THE BALL WITH TREMENDOUS ENTHUSIASM BEFORE LACAZE, FROM THE HOME 25 LINE, GAVE FRANCE THE LEAD WITH A PENALTY GOAL AFTER 13 MINUTES.

SCOTLAND STAGED A TREMENDOUS REPLY BUT THE RESOLUTE TRACKLING BY THE BONIFACE BROTHERS HELD BACK THE SCOTS. THE SCOTS' TRY GAME AFTER 25 MINUTES WITH FISHER AND CAMPBELL-LAMERTON TAKING PART IN A HANDLING MOVE WHICH ENDED WITH WHYTE CROSSING IN THE CORNER FOR A TRY. BUT WILSON COULDN'T CONVERT. THE HALF--TIME SCORE WAS 3-3 AND THAT WAS TO BE THE FINAL SCORE. THERE WAS ATTACK AND COUNTER-ATTACK THROUGHOUT THE SECOND-HALF, BUT NEITHER SIDE MANAGED TO BREAK THE OTHER'S DEFENCE.
