SURVIVORS OF ONE OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR'S MOST FAMOUS BOMBING RAIDS - THE DAMBUSTERS - ARE MEETING IN LONDON ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RAID.

THEY HAVE BEEN ATTENDING A SERIES OF FUNCTIONS COMMEMORATING THE DAY WHEN AS 617 SQUADRON THEY FLEW TO GERMANY AND DROPPED BOUNCING BOMBS ON THREE VITAL GERMAN DAMS IN THE RUHR. THEY BREACHED THE DAMS, AND THE WATER ENGULFED THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE -- MUCH OF IT THE SITE OF GERMANY'S ARMAMENTS FACTORIES.

TODAY (MAY 19) SURVIVORS OF THE RAID FROM CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND ATTENDED A SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE AT ST. CLEMENT DAMES CHURCH, THE RAF CHURCH IN THE CENTRE OF LONDON. LATER THEY ATTENDED A RECEPTION AT A NEARBY HOTEL. AMONG THOSE AT THE FUNCTIONS WERE BARNES WALLIS, WHO INVENTED THE BOUNCING BOMB; MRS GUY GIBSON, WIDOW OF WING COMMANDER GUY GIBSON, WHO WAS AWARDED THE VC FOR LEADING THE RAID AND WHO LATER DIED IN AN AIR CRASH. GIBSON'S FATHER WAS ALSO PRESENT.
