  • Description

United States air attache, Colonel Edwin Kirton - expelled from the Soviet Union for alleged "intelligence trips" and photographing of military installations - flew into Copenhagen from Russia August 15. He was accompanied by his wife.

The Soviet New agency Tass announced August 10 that Colonel Kirton, and his assistant, Captain Irving Macdonald, had been detained while photographing military objectives at Kurgan, east of the Urals. "A film containing photographs of aircraft and military industrial objectives, and several copybooks containing intelligence notes were taken from them."
In a broadcast version of the announcement, Moscow radio said that during his apprehension in Odessa, Kirton "behaved in an unduly arrogant manner, would not submit to the patrol's demands, and tried in every way to escape".

Both men had hoped to be observers at the trial of Francis Powers -the shot-down U-2 pilot - opening in Moscow's House of Unions August 17.
