Background: Beirut's international airport remained closed on September 27 because of the continuing presence of Israeli military forces. While only a token Israeli presence remains in the rest of the Lebanese capital, Israeli soldiers are still situated at strategic points including the seaport and air terminal. The Lebanese government has refused to reopen the airport while the Israeli forces remain, and United States marines who have arrived in the port to join the multinational peacekeeping body will not come ashore while Israeli soldiers remain in position.
