  • Description

The North West coast of the gulf of Mexico along a 700 mile stretch from Brownsville, Texas to new Orleans, Louisiana is threatened today, Monday 11 th September, by hurricane Carla - the worst storm to hit the United States for several years.

The centre of the storm, 30 miles in diameter, is expected to hit the Texas coast in the Port Levaca area around noon Monday, but with the storm still 50 miles out at sea, tides ten feet higher than normal and 75 mile an hour winds had already flooded eighty percent of the town of Galveston. National guardsman and rescue workers had already been out in boats to rescue some foolhardy citizens who ignored the storm warnings and stayed at home, but there have been no reports of major injuries so far.

More than 300,000 residents of the low lying coastal areas have evacuated their homes, some fleeing inland and others seeking shelter in public buildings which are expected to weather the storm. People were taking non chances, with the memory still fresh in their minds of hurricane Audrey, four years ago, which took a toll of 590 lives in Louisiana. With hurricane Carla just a few hours away most of the coastal towns are now uninhabited ghost towns, awaiting the onslaught. Even the birds, waterlogged by the driving rain, were victims of the hurricane and many were picked up passers by and carried to safety.
