Pandemonium broke out in india's Parliament on Monday (18 December) as legislators debated whether or not former Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, should be punished for breach of parliamentary privilege. In the streets, police used tear gas to disperse supporters of Mrs. Gandhi, who gathered near the home of Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, in Delhi. More than 500 members of Mrs. Gandhi's wing of the Congress Party were arrested.
SYNOPSIS: The day before the parliamentary debate began, the Janata Party organised a meeting in a street in Old Delhi. Several thousand people attended the meeting to hear speakers demand tough action against Mrs. Gandhi for breach of parliamentary privilege.
One Janata party leader, Mr. Daldev Singh, expressed his party's point of view - that Mrs. Gandhi should be expelled from parliament and imprisoned. Mrs. Gandhi has been found guilty of harassing officials who were collecting information on a vehicle manufacturing project owned by her son, Sanjay. Mrs. Gandhi was returned to Parliament last month, after winning a by-election in Southern India.
