Background: THE DEATH IN THE RIOTING IN CALCUTTA, INDIA, IS NOW UNOFFICIALLY PUT AT EIGHT, WITH SCORES INJURED AND MORE THAN 900 ARRESTED. ALTHOUGH COMMERCIAL LIFE IN CALCUTTA IS NOW BACK TO NORMAL, WITH THE ENDING OF THE 48-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE, THE VIOLENCE CONTINUES AND A CURFEW HAS BEEN CLAMPED ON MANY INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS OF THE SPRAWLING WEST BENGAL STATE CAPITAL OF 7,000,000 PEOPLE.

THE STRIKE AND RIOTING FOLLOWED THE DISMISSAL OF THE LEFTIST UNITED FRONT GOVERNMENT IN WEST BENGAL BY THE STATE GOVERNOR. THE UNITED FRONT, WHICH CALLED FOR THE STRIKE, ASKED ALL STRIKERS TO RETURN TO WORK AND PREPARE FOR AN "EVEN MIGHTIER ACTION FROM NOVEMBER 29TH WHEN THE (STATE) ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN ILLEGALLY SUMMONED BY THE GOVERNOR". THE UNITED FRONT GOVERNMENT WAS DISMISSED ON TUESDAY AFTER IT REFUSED TO CALL A MEETING OF THE STATE ASSEMBLY TO SHOW THAT IT HAD A MAJORITY.

THE NEW CHIEF MINISTER OF WEST BENGAL, DR. P.C. GHOSH, SAID YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT HE WOULD SEEK A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN THE STATE ASSEMBLY WHEN IT MEETS ON THE 29TH. ASKED ABOUT THE THREATENED DEMONSTRATIONS, DR. GHOSH SAID: "I SHALL DO WHATEVER IS POSSIBLE ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT TO SEE THAT THE ASSEMBLY SESSION IS HELD."
