  • Description

The Polisario Front, the Western Sahara Independence movement, has called on the Organisation of African Unity to stop alleged Moroccan air force napalm bomb attacks on their camps.

Members of the Fronts were in Addis Ababa on Friday (27 February) while the OAU discussed the decision whether or not to recognise the Polisario movement's new self proclaimed country - the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic.

A Polisario representative told a press conference in Addis Ababa that the Moroccan Air Force had dropped napalm bombs on a compound of tents in the Gilta corridor. He said there were civilians, including 35 women and children in the tents.

The spokesman said 300 people were injured in the attack, which occurred on the 19 February.

He said one of the OAU's main goals was to "chase colonialism out of Africa", but it should also put and end to "African colonialism in Africa".

The OAU had a duty towards the people of the Western Sahara, to act against the "criminal act" of Morocco, he said.

Meanwhile at the OAU headquarters member states were divided on the issue of recognition for Polisario. The official Algerian news agency said 21 of the 47 members had expressed support for the movement.

Algeria is backing the Front against Morocco and Mauritania, which have been given joint administration over the country, formerly a Spanish colony.

The Moroccan and Mauritanian delegates told delegates at a Ministerial council meeting of the OAU that they might withdraw from the Organisation if it recognises the Polisario Movement.

The film is serviced with an interview with a Polisario spokesman Mr. Hadel Hakim in Arabic, speaking through an English translator. Here is a transcript of the English translation.

" The criminal Moroccan forces on the 19th of this month attack our land through the Gilta corridor. In this attack, this criminal attack, the Moroccan royal criminal air force attacked by napalm the compounds of tents, including civilians. Of this attack 35 among women and children."
Three hundred burnt by napalm. The Organisation of African Unity. It belongs, all its members from African states. It has been constituted for the rights of all African equally. It has been constructed and shaped communally out of Africa, whatever cover this force of colonialists are acting. The African colonialism should also be chased out a Africa. Equally to the European colonialism when it was chased out of Africa. The Organisation of African Unity, it has sacred duty towards the people of Sahara. And it has a duty against the criminal act of Morocco."
