  • Description

American Tom Weiskopf took advantage of several putting lapses by his countryman, Lee Trevino, to win the 36 holes Piccadilly match play golf championship on Saturday (14 Oct) at Wentworth, England.

Weiskopf was one up after the first eighteen holes and clinched the match on the 33rd green to win four and three.

He won GBP7,500 and notched up his first major British tournament victory.

SYNOPSIS: American Tom Weiskopf driving off on the thirty-second hole of the thirty-six hole Piccadilly match play tournament at Wentworth in England.

His opponent - fellow American Lee Trevino, who was trailing Weiskopf by one after the first eighteen holes. At this state, Weiskopf was five up.

Trevino had to win the hole to stay in the match...he did!
The fifteenth green...the thirty-third hole of the Piccadilly tournament, and Weiskopf was still four up, largely because of some earlier putting lapses by Trevino.

Weiskopf, trying for his first victory in a major British tournament, played steadier golf....particularly with his putter.

With a first prize of eight-and-a-half-thousand pounds at stake, Trevino was not about to lose his nerve. But Weiskopf's next putt settled it and Trevino was quick to concede victory.
