    Japan's third scientific research satellite was successfully launched from the University of Tokyo's Space Observation Centre at Kagoshima on Monday (24 February).

    The University's Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science reported that the satellite, named Taiyo, was placed in an orbit very close to the one planned for it.

    Taiyo weighs 86 killogrammes (190 lbs), is octagonal in shape and is circling the earth once every 1 hour 59 minutes.

    The satellite is to be used for observation of solar waves and similar research and full scale operations will start in about two weeks time.
