Background: Chicago -- long accustomed to receiving visitors of all kinds from all places -- received some of its biggest visitors in some time today.
Residents of a south side Chicago neighborhood might have been pardoned if they shook their heads this morning...as a parade of elephants, camels and other unusual animals -- unusual, at least, for a city residential district -- marched along three miles of city streets. The animals -- including about 15 elephants ranging from "baby" elephants to rather large specimens -- were coming from a railroad siding to the International Amphitheater where the Ringling Brothers circus opened a 13-day engagement today. The animals' private 22-car train will wait on the rail siding, to carry them to their next engagement late in October.
