  • Description

IT HAS BEEN RELIABLY REPORTED THAT PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS HAS TOLD UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL ENVOY JOSE ROLZ-BENNETT THAT HE IS WILLING TO HAVE GREEK MAINLAND TROOPS WITHDRAWN FROM THE ISLAND. SENOR ROLZ-BENNETT ARRIVED IN CYPRUS LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY) AND CONFERRED IMMEDIATELY WITH THE CYPRUS PRESIDENT. AS DIPLOMATS IN SEVERAL CAPITALS WORKED TO BRING ABOUT A PEACE, THE SITUATION IN CYPRUS ITSELF REMAINED QUIET AND TENSE.

TURKEY'S DEMAND FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF GREECE'S ESTIMATED 9,000 TROOPS FROM CYPRUS AND THE TIMING OF SUCH A WITHDRAWAL HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MAIN STUMBLING BLOCKS IN THE WAY TO A SOLUTION OF THE CRISIS. ALTHOUGH PRESIDENT MAKARIOS IS APPARENTLY PREPARED TO WITHDRAW THE GREEK TROOPS STATIONED ON THE ISLAND, HE IS ALSO URGING THE REMOVAL OF THE GREEK AND TURKISH CONTINGENTS STATIONED IN CYPRUS UNDER THE 1960 AGREEMENTS. TURKEY INSISTS THAT THE CONTINGENTS -- MAD UP OF 950 GREEKS AND 650 TURKS -- SHOULD REMAIN.

THE UNEASY QUIET ON THE ISLAND IS OCCASIONALLY DISTURBED BY AN EXPLODING BOMB -- AT THE WEEKEND TWO CARS WERE DESTROYED AND A BUILDING WAS BADLY DAMAGED.

THE BUILDING -- A FIVE-STOREY DEPARTMENT STORE -- IS IN THE CENTRE OF NICOSIA. WINDOWS AND WALLS WERE DAMAGED.

THE FEAR OF SUDDEN VIOLENCE KEEPS MOST CYPRIOTS -- GREEK OR TURKISH -- INDOORS.
