Background: THE MAIN DOORS OF THE PENTAGON IN WASHINGTON WERE LOCKED FOR HALF AN HOUR YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WHEN A CROWD OF 2,500 WOMEN TRIED TO ENTER THE BUILDING TO PROTEST AGAINST AMERICA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT.

THE DOORS OF THE BUILDING WERE RE-OPENED WHEN THE SECRETARY OF DEFENCE, MR. McNAMARA, AGREED TO MEET A DELEGATION REPRESENTING THE DEMONSTRATORS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED OUTSIDE THE PENTAGON, CHANTING ANTI-WAR SLOGANS AND SINGING FOLK SONGS. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY AN ORGANISATION KNOWN AS 'WOMEN STRIKE FOR PEACE.'
PLACARDS CARRIED BY THE WOMEN BORE SUCH MESSAGES AS 'WAR IS THE UGLIEST THING I EVER SAW', 'DON'T DRAFT OUR SONS TO BURN AND DESTROY', AND 'DROP RUSK AND McNAMARA, NOT THE BOMB'.

MORE THAN 30 POLICE TRIED TO CONTROL THE WOMEN AS THEY PUSHED TOWARDS THE DOORS OF THE PENTAGON.
