    THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES FROM THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC HAVE BEEN CROSSING THE BORDER INTO HONG KONG IN RECENT MONTHS. POLICE AND TROOPS ARE COMBING THE HILLS AND VILLAGES IN THE AREAS BORDERING THE FRONTIER AND ROUNDING UP THE REFUGEES.

    FILM SHOT MAY 10, SHOWS PATROLS SEARCHING AREAS NEAR TAM SHUI HANG IN THE NEW TERRITORIES. THE REFUGEES ARE TAKEN TO THE POLICE TRAINING CAMP AT FANLING WHERE THEY ARE GIVEN FOOD AND SHELTER UNTIL THEY ARE RETURNED ACROSS THE BORDER. THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT NEARLY 10,000 REFUGEES HAD BEEN APPREHENDED NEAR THE BORDER SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THIS MONTH, AND HAD BEEN RETURNED TO THE CHINESE MAINLAND.

    POPULATION PROBLEMS IN HONG KONG HAVE BEEN AGGRAVATED BY THIS INFLUX OF IMMIGRANTS, BELIEVED TO BE PERMITTED BY THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC AUTHORITIES TO RELIEVE THE FOOD PROBLEM IN CERTAIN AREAS. THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED IT IS DETERMINED TO STOP THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION FOR THE WELFARE OF ITS OWN PEOPLE. THERE IS AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN HONG KONG AND PEKING THAT ONLY 50 PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO CROSS THE BORDER EACH DAY.

    FORTY POLICE LORRIES ARE OPERATING A SHUTTLE SERVICE, SENDING REFUGEES BACK TO THE BORDER AT THE RATE OF 1,500 PEOPLE A DAY. ADDITIONAL POLICE AND NAVAL CRAFT ARE BEING USED TO STOP REFUGEES FROM REACHING HONG KONG BY JUNK.
