  • Description

THERE HAS BEEN MORE RIOTING IN SEOUL, IN SOUTH KOREA, TODAY (FRIDAY), OVER GOVERNMENT PLANS TO RESUME DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH JAPAN.

THE RIOTS FOLLOWED THE PATTERN OF YESTERDAY'S TROUBLES WHEN THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN THEIR UNIVERSITY UNIFORMS AND CAPS SWARMED THROUGH THE CITY STREETS, URGED ON BY THEIR GROUP LEADER.

POLICE WITH TRUNCHEONS, FACE GUARDS AND GAS MASKS MARSHALLED IN CLOSED RANKS AT THE ONCOMING TIDE, THEN FLUNG THEMSELVES INTO ACTION.

TODAY, IN THE FOURTH DAY OF THE RIOTS, NEARLY 400 OF 5,000 STUDENTS ON THE RAMPAGE WERE ARRESTED. IN THE WILDEST SCENES SINCE THE DEMONSTRATIONS STARTED OVER 50 POLICE WERE INJURED, HALF OF THEM SERIOUSLY.

THE DEATH OF A STUDENT REPORTEDLY INJURED IN MONDAY'S CLASHES SET OFF TODAY'S VIOLENCE WITH THE OUTNUMBERED POLICE.

(JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA RECENTLY SIGNED AGREEMENTS IN TOKYO ON THE LAST OUTSTANDING POST-WAR ISSUES HINDERING RESUMING RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.)
