  • Description

PRESIDENT JOHNSON YESTERDAY (MONDAY) PLEDGED THE UNITED STATES TO CO-OPERATE WITH ALL NATIONS IN THE DRIVE TO GET FRESH WATER FROM THE OCEANS. THE PRESIDENT WARNED HOWEVER IN A MESSAGE TO THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON WATER DESALINATION, THAT THE COST OF DE-SALTING MUST BE CUT DRASTICALLY.

THE CONFERENCE IS BEING HELD IN THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BUILDING IN WASHINGTON AND WILL LAST UNTIL SATURDAY.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON STATED IN HIS MESSAGE: "IF OUR VISION OF THE FUTURE IS TO BE REALISED -- THE VISION OF AN INEXHAUSTIBLE SUPPLY OF PURE DRINKING WATER -- THEN THE COST OF DESALTING MUST BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED."
HE RECALLED THAT THE UNITED STATES HAD RECENTLY LAUNCHED A FIVE-YEAR, 200-MILLION DOLLAR RESEARCH PROGRAMME.

"KNOWLEDGE, LIKE THIRST, BELONGS TO ALL MEN" DECLARED THE PRESIDENT. "NO COUNTRY CAN BE THE SOLE POSSESSOR. WE IN THE UNITED STATES ARE READY TO JOIN WITH EVERY NATION TO SHARE OUR EFFORTS, TO WORK IN EVERY WAY."
MR. STEWART UDALL, AMERICAN SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, CALLED FOR A WORLD-WIDE CO-OPERATIVE EFFORT TO FIND ECONOMICAL WAYS OF TURNING SALT WATER INTO FRESH. HE TOLD THE CONFERENCE THAT 3,000-MILLION PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET WERE COMPETING FOR THE AVAILABLE FRESH WATER. THERE WAS ESSENTIALLY NO MORE WATER TODAY THAN THERE WAS WHEN CIVILISATION BEGAN.

DR. H. KRONBERGER, SCIENTIST-IN-CHIEF OF THE BRITISH ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY REACTOR GROUP, TOLD THE SYMPOSIUM THAT THE UNITED KINGDOM HAD BROUGHT NEARER THE POSSIBLE USE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY FOR DESALTING WATER.
