    POLICE CLASHED WITH AN ANGRY CROWD OF UNEMPLOYED DEMONSTRATORS OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN LONDON TODAY (TUESDAY) IN ONE OF THE UGLIEST POLITICAL PROTESTS SINCE THE DEPRESSION DAYS OF THE THIRTIES. THE MEN TRIED TO FORCE THEIR WAY INTO PARLIAMENT, CLAMOURING TO SEE THEIR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD STAGED A PROTEST MARCH THROUGH LONDON AFTER ARRIVING IN THE CAPITAL FROM MANY PARTS OF BRITAIN IN A BID TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON THE NATION'S 700,000 JOBLESS, THEIR AIM WAS TO LOBBY M.P's TO SEEK WAYS OF COPING WITH THE UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS.

    SEVERAL DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED DURING SCUFFLES WITH POLICE AND MANY PEOPLE FAINTED AS THE CROWD SURGED AROUND WESTMINISTER PALACE'S HISTORIC ENTRANCE TO THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING ITSELF. ATTACKING KNOTS OF DEMONSTRATORS HURLED THEMSELVES REPEATEDLY AGAINST THE POLICE CORDON, CHANTING "WE WANT WORK", AND "OUT WITH THE TORIES" (CONSERVATIVES).

    MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TRIED TO APPEAL FOR CALM FROM NEARBY WINDOWS, BUT COULDN'T MAKE THEMSELVES HEARD ABOVE THE DIN. PARLIAMENT CONTINUED SITTING THROUGHOUT THE UPROAR. AFTER CALLING FOR REINFORCEMENTS, POLICE MANAGED TO DISPERSE THE DEMONSTRATORS.
