Background: Only a few Latin American countries have so far used their highly costly armies for constructive purpose like road building farming and other general construction jobs. Both Spanish Honduras and Mexico has done so one a small scale.

The Cuban Army is now taking a great and active part in Fidel Castro's Agrarian Reform programme, Soldiers in Cuba are being used to teach in schools, build houses for the poor, build schools, a bridges, and plant Eucalyptus trees.

In a barren area studded with low mountains, rocks and small scrub between Pinar Del Rio's town of Guane and Mantua, about 500 Soldiers have been working for many months on a giant tree-planting programme. On about 16,500 acres of otherwise useless land, Castro's army claims to have planted 21 million trees. Peasant women also help in the project - working in seed beds and filling plants pots for seedlings.
