Background: Italian space technicians were yesterday (Friday) going through their final checks for today's successful launch of the third satellite in an Italian-United States joint programme. The 360-pound (164-kg.) satellite, called San Marco-C, was launched at 0735 GMT today form a platform in the Indian Ocean off the Kenya coast at Formosa Bay, near Malindi.

The satellite was carried into equatorial orbit by a United States Scout rocket, and will be used to study the density and temperature of the upper atmosphere.

This film of the preparations for the launch was shot by Visnews staff cameraman Mohamed Amin.
