    KENYATTA: "THE CONGO SITUATION IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE SERIOUS. AND, THEREFORE, I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: I, THE PRIME MINISTER, JOMO KENYATTA, ASSISTED BY MR. DIALLO TELLI, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE O.A.U., MET WITH THE U.S. AMBASSADOR, MR. WILLIAM ATTWOOD, IN THE GATUNDU RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. JOMO KENYATTA, TO START TALKS PENDING THE ARRIVAL OF MR. THOMAS KANZA IN NAIROBI.... THE PURPOSE OF THESE TALKS IS TO EXPLORE ALL POSSIBLE MEANS TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CIVILIAN POPULATIONS, INCLUDING ALL FOREIGNERS IN STANLEYVILLE, AND TO AVOID ANY ACTION WHICH MIGHT PREJUDICE OUR EFFORT. IN THE MEANTIME, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE O.A.U. AD HOC COMMISSION ON THE CONGO, MR. JOMO KENYATTA, APPEALS STRONGLY TO ALL PARTIES INVOLVED IN THE CONGO TO CEASE HOSTILITIES. THAT'S THE SHORT MESSAGE WE HAVE ISSUED ON THE CONGO."

KENYATTA, WHO IS ALSO CHAIRMAN OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY'S CONGO CONCILIATION COMMITTEE, HAD JUST COMPLETED URGENT TALKS AT HIS GATUNDU HOME, NEAR NAIROBI.

    OTHERS PRESENT WERE THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO KENYA, MR. WILLIAM ATTWOOD, THE O.A.U. SECRETARY-GENERAL, MR. DIALLO TELLI, AND MR. KENYATTA'S POLITICAL ADVISERS. THE CONGOLESE REBEL "FOREIGN MINISTER," MR. THOMAS KANZA, WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE TAKEN PART, BUT DID NOT SHOW UP.

    THE TALKS WERE CALLED PRINCIPALLY TO DISCUSS THE 1,000 EUROPEANS HELD PRISONERS-OF-WAR BY THE REBEL STANLEYVILLE REGIME. AFTERWARDS, MR. KENYATTA MADE A BRIEF STATEMENT:--
