    THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL SPACE SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM OPENED IN WASHINGTON MAY 1. AN OPENING CEREMONY WAS HELD IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT AUDITORIUM AND DELEGATES HEARD SPEECHES BY OFFICIALS OF COSPAR - THE COMMITTEE ON SPACE RESEARCH ESTABLISHED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC UNIONS.

    SPEAKERS WERE MR R.W. PORTER OF THE U.S.A., A VICE PRESIDENT, AND MR H.C. VAN DE HULST OF THE NETHERLANDS, PRESIDENT. WITH THEM ON THE ROSTRUM WERE LLOYD V. BERKNER, CHAIRMAN OF THE U.S. NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND JEROME B. WEISNER, SCIENCE ADVISER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A.

    MAJOR GHERMAN TITOV, THE SOVIET 'COSMONAUT', WHO WAS TO ATTEND THE SPACE CONFERENCE ON MAY 2, TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK MAY 1 THAT HE PARACHUTED TO THE GROUND AT THE END OF HIS 45-HOUR FLIGHT ROUND THE EARTH. THIS STATEMENT RESOLVED ONE OF THE MYSTERIES OF HIS 17-ORBIT FLIGHT LAST AUGUST. THERE HAD BEEN SPECULATIONS THAT HIS 'VOSTOK 11' SPACECRAFT LANDED ON THE EARTH WITH THE PILOT STILL ON BOARD.

    UNITED STATES ASTRONAUT, COLONEL JOHN GLENN, WILL ALSO ATTEND THE SPACE SYMPOSIUM TO GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF HIS FLIGHT THROUGH SPACE.
