  • Description

Five Greek police chier's were jailed in Athens on Thursday (14 October) for up to six years each. All had been found guilty of torturing political prisoners during the military regime which collapsed in July 1974.

SYNOPSIS: For security reasons the week-long trial was held at the korydallos prison.

The accused man were retired Lieutenant-General Mihalis Karabatsos, retired Lieutenant-General Xenophon Tzavaras, Lieute-nant-Colonel Vassilios Favatas, Major Mihalis Moroyiannis and Major Demetrios karagiorghos. They were charged before the civil court with causing serious bodily harm to people detained for activities against the seven-year military regime. They were also accused of insulting and threatening prisoners and of abuse of power against detainees held by security forces in the Athens suburb of Nea Ionia.

The convicted officers appealed against the verdict, and were remanded in custody pending the appeal hearing, probably in December. A similar trial two days earlier caused a political crisis in the Greek Parliament following criticisms that the two-year penalties given to six other senior policeman were not severe enough.
