Background: TUN ABDUL RAZAK, THE DEPUTY MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF DEFENCE, ON SEPTEMBER 8 URGED MALAYS IN SINGAPORE TO REMAIN CALM IN THE FACE OF THE PRESENT DISTURBANCES, WHEN HE TOURED MALAY VILLAGES IN THE GEYLANG SERAI AREA - THE WORST AFFECTED SPOT IN THE EASTERN SECTOR.

HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SINGAPORE'S DEPUTY PREMIER, DOCTOR TOH CHIN CHYE AND MR. SENU BIN ABDUL RAHMAN, MALAYSIAN MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING AND SEVERAL POLICE OFFICERS.

MALAY VILLAGERS WERE OUT IN STRENGTH TO WELCOME TUN RAZAK, WHO TOLD THEM THAT THE PRESENT DISTURBANCES - COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN CHARACTER TO THE COMMUNAL RIOTS OF JULY 21 THIS YEAR - WHERE SPARKED OFF BY INDONESIAN AGENTS. THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT, HE ADDED, HAD DOCUMENTARY PROOF OF THIS FACT, AND THAT MOST OF THE AGENTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN POLICE SWOOPS CARRIED OUT RECENTLY.

THE MALAYSIAN DEPUTY PREMIER ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE ON SEPTEMBER 9 AS RACIAL VIOLENCE CONTINUED AGAIN WHEN CURFEW WAS LIFTED SHORTLY BEFORE DAWN. ONE MAN WAS STABBED TO DEATH, THUS BRINGING THE DEATH TOLL TO THIRTEEN. MORE THAN 700 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, INCLUDING INDONESIAN AGENTS, PROVOCATEURS A SECRET GANGSTERS.

MEANWHILE, THE ISLAND-WIDE CURFEW WILL BE RELAXED FURTHER AS FROM SEPTEMBER 9 WITH DAYTIME RESTRICTIONS ONLY IN THE MAIN TROUBLE CENTRE OF GEYLANG SERAI. IN OTHER AREAS, THE CURFEW WILL OPERATE ONLY DURING THE NIGHTTIME.
