  • Description

The annual parade in Amsterdam to commemorate the general strike in 1941 turned into a demonstration on Friday (February 25), when about twenty thousand marchers protested at the planned release from jail of three Nazi war criminals. The three men, sentenced to death after the war for crimes involving the deaths of Jews, had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment in 1950. Now, the dutch cabinet plane to release them -- although the final decision will only be made at a meeting of the Dutch parliament on Tuesday (February 29).

During Friday's parade, commemorating the 1941 communist-inspired general labour strike held in protest at the deportation of Jews from Holland, wreathe were laid at a war statue following a silent march. Among the wreath-layers were several members of Amsterdam's town council, including the Lord Mayor.
