  • Description

Representatives from North and South American navies have been gathering in Lima, Peru for the ninth Inter-American Naval Conference (21-25 August). More than a dozen countries sent delegates or observers, and an official communique has reported that 'positive results' were achieved in all talks, covering the roles of their various navies in peace and war.

SYNOPSIS: The five-day conference was held at Lima's Sheraton Hotel, and was attended by many high-ranking naval officers. The discussions were said to be characterised by great cordiality and frankness, and the principle of preserving unity, peace and liberty among the member countries was reaffirmed. Delegates came from throughout Latin America, including Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala. A United States team was also present, and Canada and Mexico sent observers. The delegates exchanged technical and professional knowledge, and discussed a wide range of topics. They agreed to pool their resources to fight illicit sea activities such as pirating and illegal fishing. They also agreed to devise strong protective laws for ships carrying hydro-carbons in north and south American waters. Joint preservation of fishing was another principle approved, before the conference concluded.
