THE NEW 15-MAN ASSEMBLY WILL REPLACE THE OLD LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL WHICH RULED WITH THE GOVERNOR AS CHAIRMAN. THE CHANGE WAS AGREED ON AS PART OF A NEW CONSTITUTION PROMULGATED BY BRITAIN LAST MAY.

POLLING BEGAN VERY SLOWLY THIS MORNING, WITH ONLY 550 VOTES BEING CAST DURING THE FIRST HOUR.

BIG CROWDS BEGAN TURNING OUT AT POLLING STATIONS LATER, HOWEVER, AS PARTY WORKERS CONTINUED HOUSE-TO-HOUSE VISITS URGING POTENTIAL SUPPORTERS TO VOTE.

THE GOVERNOR OF GIBRALTAR, SIR VARYL BEGG, WAS ONE OF THOSE WHO WENT TO THE POLLING STATION EARLY.

OTHERS INCLUDED MAJOR ROBERT PELIZA, LEADER OF THE INTEGRATION WITH BRITAIN PARTY, MR. PETER ISOLA, THE DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER, CANDIDATE MR. A. STAGNETTO, AND THE CHIEF MINISTER, SIR JOSHUA HASSAN.

THE COUNTING OF VOTES WAS DUE TO BEGIN LATE TONIGHT, WITH FIRST RESULTS EXPECTED EARLY TOMORROW (FRIDAY).

GIBRALTAR WAS CEDED TO BRITAIN "IN PERPETUITY" UNDER THE 1713 TREATY OF UTRECHT, AND HAS BEEN AN IMPORTANT STRATEGIC BASE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN.

FOLLOWING ATTEMPTS BY SPAIN TO CLAIM THE COLONY, A REFERENDUM IN 1967 RESULTED IN AN OVERWHELMING VOTE FOR RETAINING LINKS WITH BRITAIN, WITH 12,000 ELECTORS VOTING IN FAVOUR AND ONLY 44 VOTING FOR SPANISH SOVEREIGNTY.
