    IN THE PRESENCE OF HIGH-RANKING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND DETACHMENTS OF CUSTOMS OFFICERS OF BOTH COUNTRIES, THE NIGERIAN MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES, ALHAJI YAHAYA GUSAU, AND THE DAHOMEY MINISTER FOR FINANCE, ECONOMIC AFFAIRS AND PLANNING, M. PASCAL CHABI KAO, OPENED A JOINT CUSTOMS STATION ON THE BORDER BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES LAST SATURDAY (27 JULY).

    THE CUSTOMS STATION, - FIRST ENVISAGED FIVE YEARS AGO - COST GBP100,000 TO BUILD AND IS EXPECTED TO EASE THE FLOW OF TRADE.

    AT COLOURFUL CEREMONY HELD TO MARK THE OCCASION - INCLUDING A MARCH-PAST OF CUSTOMS MEN - A CORDIAL WELCOME WAS GIVEN TO THE VISITING MINISTER FROM DAHOMEY. IN HIS INAUGURAL SPEECH, THE NIGERIAN MINISTER STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEW STATION FOR THE CAUSE OF AFRICAN UNITY; HE EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT IT WOULD NOT ONLY BENEFIT NIGERIA AND DAHOMEY BUT WOULD "ALSO BE ONE FURTHER STEP TOWARDS THE WEST AFRICAN COMMON MARKET".
