    A SQUATTER AREA IN SINGAPORE WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). TWENTY MAKE-SHIFT HOMES WERE DESTROYED AND 140 PEOPLE MADE HOMELESS.

    THE FIRE STARTED WHEN A STOVE WAS ACCIDENTALLY OVERTURNED IN ONE OF THE HUTS.

    DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. SEVERAL SHOPS IN THE AREA WERE ALSO GUTTED, INCLUDING UNDERTAKER'S ESTABLISHMENT.

    SINGAPORE HAS SPRAWLING SQUATTER SETTLEMENTS WHICH NORMALLY EMERGE NEAR HOUSING ESTATES AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS.

    ONE-EIGHTH OF THE ISLAND'S POPULATION OF NEARLY TWO MILLION ARE SQUATTERS AND IT IS WORRYING THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT. SQUATTER DWELLERS HAVE REFUSED TO GIVE UP THE LANDS WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN OCCUPYING FOR MANY DECADES.
