    The 15th congress of the Czechoslovak communist party was opened in Prague on Monday (12 April) by the party's Secretary-General, Gustav Husak.

    More than 1,200 delegates were present at the opening. These included 86 delegations from foreign communist and socialist parties.

    In his opening speech, Dr. Husak spoke of Czechoslovakia's plans for the future of its economy. Emphasis would be placed, he said, on producing more consumer goods and promised that policy would continue to aim at stable prices and higher living standards.

    He stressed the need to develop and modernise the country's industrial potential, particularly in the area of electric power production.

    On foreign affairs, Dr. Husak said that the alliance with the Soviet Union would be further developed along with the links with other socialist countries.

    He reiterated support for peaceful co-existence in the world, but said that this would not mean "conciliation in the ideological sphere".
