  • Description

Zambia's judiciary must help stamp out the soaring crime rate by Handing out stiff punishment. This call was made by President Kenneth Kaunda when he officially opened the first session of the newly created Supreme Court of Zambia in Lusaka on Tuesday (18 September).

Dr. Kaunda said there had been a steady rise in the crime rate. He added that the elimination of the "cancer" of crime was a major preoccupation of society, and it should not be allowed to dig roots in the fabric of Zambian society.

The Supreme Court replaces the Court of Appeal. The President said Parliament would continue to be the main source of Zambian law, and the judiciary its administrative instrument, "but in the administration of the law the judiciary has a heavy burden to ensure that the true needs of our society are reflected in conformity with the spirit of justice".

The Supreme Court opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mainza Chona together with other leading dignitaries.
