Background: On Southend Pier, Essex, - biggest pier in the UK - drawings and paintings by schoolchildren are on public view after a 10,00 mile voyage.
The paintings are from the seaside resort of Kamakura near Tokyo, Japan, and the idea to send them to Southend is by a Southender now living in Kamakura, Lewis Bush.
Mr. Bush was struck by the similarity of the two towns and invited local Japanese children to send him about twenty pictures to exhibit in Southend. He received 250 from local children.
Ambassador Ohno accompanied by the Mayor of Southend opened the exhibition Nov. 5 linking by words two towns 10,000 miles apart.
