President Johnson said Thursday night (15 October) that the resignation of Soviet Premier Khrushchev "may or may not be a sign of deep turmoil or a sign of changes to come."
He made the remarks in a speech at Madison Square Garden in New York City and later repeated them to reporters outside the huge arena.
"For ourselves, the need is clear -- we should keep steady in our goals," he said. "Peace is the mission of the American people and we are not about to be deterred.
