  • Description

AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE IN LONDON TODAY (TUESDAY), THE ROYAL MEWS WAS OPENED TO NEWSMEN AND CAMERAMEN. THE VISITORS WERE SHOWN AROUND THE MEWS AND SAW THE ELABORATE STATE COACHES AND LANDAUS IN WHICH MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY APPEAR ON IMPORTANT OCCASIONS. THEY SAW TOO, THE FAMOUS HORSES WHICH DRAW THE ROYAL CARRIAGES.

IN THE COACH HOUSE, THE CARRIAGES WERE BEING PREPARED FOR A DRIVE AROUND THE MEWS. OF GREATEST INTEREST WAS THE GOLD STATE COACH - WITH ITS RICH ADORNMENT OF CARVING. THIS COACH HAS BEEN USED FOR EVERY CORONATION SINCE THAT OF GEORGE IV. IT IS PULLED BY EIGHT HORSES - AND WAS ONCE USED WHENEVER THE MONARCH DROVE TO OPEN PARLIAMENT. BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN USED AT ALL SINCE THE CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH IN 1953.

ALSO IN THE COACH HOUSE IS THE 1902 STATE LANDAU - CARRIAGE FREQUENTLY SEEN ON STATE OCCASIONS. IT WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT FOR KING EDWARD VII FOR HIS VISIT TO THE CITY OF LONDON THE DAY FOLLOWING HIS CORONATION. QUEEN ELIZABETH USES IT TO MEET STATE VISITORS ARRIVING IN LONDON. THE INSIDE OF THE CARRIAGE IS FURNISHED IN CRIMSON SILK.

ABOUT THIRTY CARRIAGE HORSES ARE KEPT IN THE ROYAL MEWS. OF THESE TEN ARE GREYS AND 20 BAYS. THE MOST FAMOUS HORSES ARE THE WINDSOR GREYS. THEY WERE ONCE USED FOR PRIVATE DRIVES AROUND WINDSOR, AND SO ACQUIRED THEIR TITLE - BUT TODAY THEY ARE ONLY BROUGHT OUT ON THE MOST SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

AFTER BEING SHOWN AROUND THE COACH HOUSE AND STABLES, THE NEWSMEN WERE SEVERAL CARRIAGES OUTSIDE. THEY WERE DRIVEN ROUND AN OPEN ENCLOSURE. BOTH HORSES AND POSTILIONS WERE DRESSED IN FULL LIVERY.

THE STATE LANDAUS ARE FREQUENTLY USED TO TAKE EMBASSY STAFFS WITH NEW AMBASSADORS TO PRESENT CREDENTIALS AT THE PALACE. BUT THEY ARE ALSO USED ON THE OCCASION OF THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT. THEY ARE DRAWN BY TWO BAY HORSES AND ARE DRIVEN FROM THE BOX.

THE IRISH STATE COACH WAS BUILT IN 1852. IT WAS BOUGHT BY QUEEN VICTORIA AFTER SHE SAW IT AT THE DUBLIN EXHIBITION - HENCE ITS NAME. QUEEN ELIZABETH USES THE COACH, AS HER FATHER DID, TO DRIVE TO THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT - AND IN THE PAST HUNDRED YEARS IT HAS TAKEN ITS PLACE IN ALL OF THE GREAT ROYAL PROCESSIONS THROUGH LONDON. QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER AND PRINCESS MARGARET RODE IN THIS COACH AT THE FUNERAL OF KING GEORGE VI AND AT QUEEN ELIZABETH'S CORONATION.
