Background: The first Disneyland to be built outside the United States opened on April 15 in Japan's capital, Tokyo. The 600-million-dollar entertainment park is built on reclaimed land at the north-east corner of Tokyo Bay about 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the city centre. One thousand white doves and 30,000 balloons were released to celebrate the occasion -- but what the crowd really came to see were Mickey, Minnie and the other Walt Disney favourites. The park was officially opened by Walt Disney's chairman Mr. Cardon Walter and the chairman of the Oriental Land Company, 69-year-old Masatomo Takahashi. It was Mr. Takahashi's company which began reclaiming land for the 84-hectare (202 acre) site 19 years ago and in 1979 Disney agreed to provide its technology and advice during construction. Ten million people are expected to visit the park this year and the weekends are already fully booked until October. Each day 300 entertainers will bring stage shows, musical performances and parades to the 40,000 visitors. There are more than 30 attractions throughout the park's five 'theme lands' which are identical to those in the United States with one essential difference -- the language.
