    IT'S THERE THAT A SPECIAL MILITARY COURT MARTIAL OPENED THE HEARING YESTERDAY (MONDAY) INTO LAST JANUARY'S REVOLT IN THE ARMY. THE COUNTRY THEN CAME NEAR TO THE BRINK OF REVOLUTION, THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR TOLD THE COURT.

    HE SAID THAT A GROUP OF SOLDIERS HELD THE CITY TO RANSOM FOR SIX DAYS. FIFTEEN LIVE WERE LOST, SHOPS WERE LOOTED AND DAMAGED, AND THE PEOPLE WERE IN FEAR AND TERROR, HE SAID.

    NINETEEN NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE FIRST BATTALION OF THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES ARE IN THE DOCK. THEY ARE CHARGED WITH MUTINY WITH VIOLENCE OR THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE. THE CHARGE CARRIES THE DEATH PENALTY. ALL THE DEFENDANTS PLEAD NOT GUILTY.

    (HELPING MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER IN TANGANYIKA ARE NIGERIAN TROOPS, WHILE ZANZIBAR'S SECURITY CONTINUES TO BE ENSURED BY A FORCE OF 300 POLICE FROM TANGANYIKA.)
