    INJURED SAILORS WERE LIFTED OFF A U.S. NAVY COMMUNICATIONS SHIP, THE LIBERTY BY HELICOPTER AFTER SHE HAD BEEN BOMBARDED IN ERROR BY ISRAELI TORPEDO BOATS AND AIRCRAFT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ON THURSDAY (8 JUNE 67).

    THEY WERE TAKEN TO AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER, THE AMERICA, FOR TREATMENT. AT LEAST 10 SAILORS DIED AND 100 WERE INJURED -- 20 OF THEM SERIOUSLY -- IN THE ATTACK WHICH TOOK PLACE 15 MILES (24 KILOMETRES) OFF THE SINAI PENINSULA.

    THE 7,190-TON VESSEL CARRYING A CREW OF ABOUT 300 WAS STRUCK BY AT LEAST ONE TORPEDO. ISRAEL APOLOGISED TO THE UNITED STATES WHO MADE AN IMMEDIATE PROTEST.

    IT WAS NOT KNOWN IF THE LIBERTY RETURNED THE ISRAELI FIRE.
