  • Description

A day of remembrance and rededication
The Defence of Pakistan Day is the annual commemoration of a historic event in the national life of the country. It was on this day six years ago that the valiant Armed Forces of Pakistan pushed back a wanton. unprovoked aggression by our hostile neighbour, and the nation rose as one man to meet the challenge to its independence and territorial integrity. The day celebrated under the lengthening shadow of another ugly menace from the same source., and in the wake of a more insidious confrontation in which the enemy chose to strike from behind the cover and camouflage provided by its willing tools in the eastern wing of Pakistan.

Our Armed Forces, as President Yahya Khan says in his message 'have always proved equal to the task entrusted to them'. be it in the open confrontation with India, as in the Sept 65 war of aggression, or in equalling the activities of rebels and miscreants operating with the active support of plotters and armed infiltrators from across the border. This day is sacred to the memory of those who fell for the cause of national defence-- those who achieved 'Shahadat' and those who became 'Ghazis' and standard bearers of a long tradition of patriotism and devotion to duty. The example of these brave sons of Pakistan will serve, in President Yahya Khan's words, as 'a beacon light to the coming generations of Pakistan.'
This day we recall with pride the inspiring valour and outstanding skill of our brave soldiers, sailors and airman who rose to the pinnacle of glory in repelling the forces of aggression and this wrote a new and magnificent chapter in the history of Islam. This day we were called upon to face a challenge to our existence as an independent nation, and Allah be praised we proved our mettle and blunted the enemy's attack within hours of its launching. The experience endowed the nation with a sense of renewed confidence and greater solidarity.

The nation today celebrates the Defence of Pakistan Day with salutations to the gallant Armed Forces for staunchly safeguarding the country's territorial integrity against India's wanton and condemnable aggression six years ago.

The day marked with impressive military parades, hoisting of the National Flag on all public and private buildings, holding of meetings, symposia, civic and sports functions, and illuminations at night.

Political parties, social and voluntary organisations and educational institutions chalked out an elaborate programme of meetings, Meena Bazars and social gatherings at which tributes will be paid to the Armed Forces for showing rare courage, sense of oneness and unbending resolution.

Members of the non-Muslim communities participated in the celebrations by holding special prayers in their places of worship and arranging commemorative functions in recognition of the supreme courage displayed during the 1965 war.

RAWALPINDI, Sept 5: The President of Pakistan, Gen.A.M.Yahya Khan, reaffirmed today that Pakistan would brook no interference in its internal affairs by any out side Power.

In this Defence Day message, the President said: 'Pakistan, by the grace of Allah, has come to stay', and added that no power on earth can undo it.

PAYING RICH TRIBUTES TO THE MARTYRS AND VALIANT SOLDIERS OF THE INDO-PAKISTAN WAR OF 1965, THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT THE EXAMPLE OF THESE MEN WOULD SERVE AS A BEACON TO THE COMING GENERATIONS OF PAKISTANI SOLDIERS, SAILORS AND AIRMEN.
