    Driver Richard Petty, who has won more money in stock-car racing than anyone else in the United States, became the first man to win the Daytona 500 for the third time on Sunday (14 February). There were 40 cars competing in the annual Florida race for late-model stock cars. Petty's 1971 Plymouth was one of two factory-backed cars in the race. The other half of the Petty factory team, a 1971 Dodge driven by Buddy Baker, finished second.

    After his victory, Petty was interviewed by a reporter of America's National Broadcasting Company.

    Petty became the first three-time winner of the race with an average speed of about 145 miles per hour. Team-mate Baker took second position.
