    RACES BEGAN THIS MORNING (SATURDAY) IN THE INTERNATIONAL CATAMARAN CHALLENGE TROPHY EVENT AT THORPE BAY IN ESSEX. IT IS AN ANNUAL EVENT BETWEEN CATAMARANS OF THE UNITED STATES AND BRITAIN AND HAS BEEN POPULARLY DUBBED THE "LITTLE AMERICA'S CUP."
    THIS IS THE FOURTH YEAR THAT THE RACES HAVE BEEN HELD. THE FIRST THREE HAVE BEEN WON BY BRITAIN - AND HOPES ARE HIGH THAT THE "EMMA HAMILTON" DEFENDING THE TROPHY MAY MAKE AMENDS FOR BRITAIN. HER CREW ARE A.R. HOLLOWAY AND R.J. WHITE.

    THE UNITED STATES CHALLENGER IS A SLEEK CRAFT CALLED "SEALION". HER CREW, WHO BOTH COME FROM STANFORD IN CONNECTICUT, ARE JERRY HIEBBARD AND DAVID HUBBART.

    ADDING AN AIR OF OFFICIAL RECOGNITION TO PROCEEDING IS A ROYAL NAVY GUARD SHIP, THE H.M.S. "CHAILEY" WHICH IS ANCHORED IN THE BAY.

    THERE WAS A LARGE, INTERESTED CROWD TO WATCH THE START THIS MORNING IN IDEAL CONDITIONS. THE WINNER OF THE TROPHY IS THE FIRST CATAMARAN TO WIN FOUR RACES. AS THEY SAILED GRACEFULLY PAST THE BUOY AT THE START OF THE FIRST RACE, THE "EMMA HAMILTON" HAD A NARROW LEAD OVER THE AMERICAN CHALLENGER.

    THE FIRST RACE WAS WON BY THE "EMMA HAMILTON". IT WAS A CLEAR CUT VICTORY - THE BRITISH BOAT COMPLETED THE 19 1/2 MILE TRIANGULAR COURSE IN 2 HOURS, 3 MINUTES AND 12 SECONDS. THE CHALLENGER WAS 9 MINUTES 15 SECONDS BEHIND.
