    The United Nations Council for Namibia opened a special six-day meeting in the Zambian capital of Lusaka on Monday (20 March), in preparation for a special UN General Assembly meeting next month on the future of the former German colony. Speakers at the opening session included the Zambian Prime Minister, Mainza Chona, United Nations Under Secretary Teng of China and Sam Nujoma, President of South West African Peoples' Organisation, - SWAPO - who criticised the West for not exerting enough pressure on South Africa.

    SYNOPSIS: After the meeting had been officially opened by the Council's president, Zambia's Gwendolyn Konie, Prime Minister Chona, started the session by looking back.

    United nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim was represented at the meeting by Under Secretary Teng of China.

    Sam Nujoma opened his speech with strong criticism of South Africa and Rhodesia.
