  • Description

An African athlete Monday (31 March) punched a rival on the back of the neck during the 5000 metre South African Championship and went on to win the event.

More than fifteen athletes from eleven nations were taking part in the race, which was part of the South African Open titles held at the Green Point stadium in Capetown.

People watching the race said that Titu? Mamabola of Eastern Transvaal hit the South African record holder, Ewald Bonzet, an the back of the neck after he had been frustrated by constant jostling and the use of elbows. Mamabola went on to win the race and became the only African to take a gold medal during the meeting.

Bonzet finished in second place but was disqualified by officials for balking.

Mamabola had his sights set on beating Bonzet's 5000 metre record of 13 Min 31.2 secs when the incident happened. He had missed the record by one tenth of a second a few days earlier. He finished Monday's race five seconds outside the record.

The men's two hundred metres final was won by E. Essmann of South Africa with A. Treva of Rhodesia second and E. Jeffreys of South Africa third.
