  • Description

General Franco, in his traditional New year message tonight (30 Dec.), promised that Spain will "fight the passion and violence of anyone who tries to disturb peaceful coexistence among Spaniards."
The Spanish leader's message came only hours after he had announced that the death sentences passed on six Basque nationalists had been commuted to 30 years imprisonment.

In his nationally televised message, General Franco made only one reference to the reprieves. He said that patriotic rallies throughout Span, expressing loyalty to him and to they army "reinforced our authority in such a way that it facilitated agreement with the council of the realm to make use of the prerogative of granting an indult of the death penalty."
He said that this was despite the gravity of the crimes and the reprieves would enable Spain to enter year-long celebrations in honour of St. James, Patron of the nation.
