  • Description

A brief shooting incident followed a scuffle between rival factions at the National Convention of the Justicialist (Peronist) Movement in Buenos Aires on Sunday (25 June). At least one person was reported wounded in the incident.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that fighting broke out when some of the attendants at the convention tried to prevent Secretary-General Jose Rucci of the Peronist-dominated General Labour Confederation (C.G.T.) from entering the hall. Minuets later shots were heard in the hall and a man of about 25 was taken to hospital. The convention was expected to nominate former strongman President Juan Person as the Movement's Presidential candidate in next March's General Elections.

Person went into exile when he was ousted in September 1955, after nine years of strongman rule, and has been living in Madrid (Spain) since 1960. Although sharply divided among themselves, his followers still form the largest single political grouping in Argentinean, and the military government of President Alejadro Lanusse has been negotiating with the former President in order to lead the country to peaceful elections. They're aimed at ending almost seven years of military rule in Argentina.
